Our History
There’s more to writing than just getting it right . . .
and there’s more to the Write Source than meets the eye.
That’s why we thought you’d appreciate knowing a little bit about us.
Our Workplace
A great deal of thought and personal attention is given to each and every project our staff undertakes—even choosing just the right environment in which to create our writing programs. We work out of an 1848 farmhouse and barn that overlook several acres of inspirational Wisconsin farmland.
The house has an interesting past (including tales of a ghost or two!). We feel certain that the many times teachers have gathered here for various writing projects will also become a lasting part of the history of this old house.
Some of the things we’ve produced—most notably our writing handbooks—have been very well received and help to explain how we’ve managed to stay in business for 29 years now. We currently have a dozen or so former and present teachers on staff.
We pride ourselves in being able to stay on top of the latest developments in the field. Right now, that means we are well versed in the writing process, writing across the curriculum, thinking skills, reading-writing connections, workplace writing, e-publishing, writing traits, and standards and assessment. We are determined to continue learning in the future.
Our Story
The business was established in 1977 with the publication of the Basic English Revisited handbook. Basic English Revisited was geared toward the English needs of high school and junior high school students. Shortly after this initial publication was completed, coordinating skillsbooks and teacher materials were developed.
In 1986 the Write Source handbook was published. Write Source targeted students in the elementary and middle schools and also had its own array of coordinating materials. At this same time, the name of the company was changed from Basic English Revisited to the Write Source.
Between 1986 and the present, many changes have taken place. Currently, the educational materials we develop are part of the Great Source/Houghton Mifflin line.
